UPDATE: The House of Representatives on JUly 14, 2017 rejected Rep. Tenney's legislation that would have forced the military to buy American-made eating utensils

July 11, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Every member of the U.S. military could soon be eating with forks, knives and other stainless steel utensils made by America's last flatware maker, Sherrill Manufacturing in Central New York.

U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney has proposed an amendment to a defense bill that would require the Department of Defense to purchase domestically-sourced stainless steel flatware.

The long-standing mandate was dropped in 2007 after the primary domestic supplier, Oneida Ltd., shifted its flatware manufacturing overseas and closed its plant in Sherrill, Oneida County.

But since Sherrill Manufacturing took over the former Oneida Ltd. factory, the company has become one of the top suppliers of flatware to the Department of Defense and federal agencies.

Tenney, R-New Hartford, said her amendment would ensure that the military buys only 100 percent American-made flatware with materials sourced in the U.S., of which Sherill Manufacturing is now the only supplier.

The company has sold more than $6.8 million worth of its Liberty Tabletop brand of flatware to the federal government since 2008, demonstrating it can be a reliable supplier at fair and reasonable prices, according to Tenney.

The federal government buys about 500,000 stainless steel utensils each year from Sherrill Manufacturing. Most of the flatware is sent to military bases around the world.

Mattthew A. Roberts, the company co-founder and president, said Tenney's amendment could provide a significant boost in business.

"We think it could triple our business," Roberts told syracuse.com. "It is an extremely significant job creator for us. We may need to hire another 15 people to run the machinery."
