Fltware Made in USA

They Kept the Last Flatware Factory in America Open

In 2005 Oneida shut the flatware plant in Sherrill, New York. Matt Roberts and Greg Owens bought it and reopened it the next day. Liberty Tabletop is still the only company making stainless steel flatware in America..

Sherrill, New York, made silverware for more than a hundred years. In 2005 Oneida shut the plant, and the town was supposed to be finished with that work.

Matt Roberts and Greg Owens did not accept it. Roberts had managed the factory. Owens had been another Oneida manufacturing manager. When the company ended U.S. production, the two of them bought the plant and the equipment and reopened it the next day as Sherrill Manufacturing. Not after a long study. The next day.

They did not have a rescue fund or a neat ending waiting for them. They had a building, some machines, and people who already knew how to make forks, knives, and spoons. That was the bet.

For a while they kept making product for Oneida. Then Oneida pulled the remaining American work and sent it overseas. A lot of factories end right there. This one did not. They took government flatware contracts to keep the lights on. In 2010 they filed Chapter 11. They sold equipment they could not use and space they could not fill, and leased back only the part of the factory they could still run. They came out of bankruptcy in 2013.

Then they did the harder thing. They stopped waiting on someone else to keep the line alive and built their own brand, Liberty Tabletop. They sold 18/10 stainless flatware straight to people who wanted it made in the United States. No department store in the middle that could drop them the minute a cheaper import showed up. Direct from Sherrill.

That is why the factory is still there. Liberty Tabletop is the only company still manufacturing stainless steel flatware in America. Same town. Same trade. U.S. steel. They did not restore the old Oneida operation. What they saved was the last line, and they have kept it running.

Last weekend we told that story. It reached millions of people. Liberty told their own customers that tens of thousands of them then came to the Liberty site. They were proud of it, and they should be. A factory most of the country had already written off put American-made flatware back in front of people, and a lot of those people went looking for it.

If you want forks and spoons that are actually made here, this is the place that still makes them. Not a label on someone else’s product. The factory. The steel. The work.
